I work at the library is the town of Colfax. Before I worked there I would go to the library once a week to get my book fix, go on line and check my e-mail. Well, one day I was there at noon and the TORNADO warning siren went off!
I look around at the other people in the library, nobody is looking worried and I ask " Uh, shouldn't we go?" and I was told that, that was the warning siren going off, but that was also the noon bell! ( I so, so want to push that button! I will have to ask the Police Chief if I can! ) I have gotten used to it, I can ignore it like a local can! Later I got the library job and sometimes I close and get off work at 8pm. I love getting off at that time as I get to hear this Church ring the bells. I don't know if they ring at other times as I have only heard them at 8pm. There is just something calming about Church bells ringing. Up in Alaska I think that the big Catholic Church down town has bells, but I have never heard them. This might be hard to believe but I have only heard Church bells in the movies!
It's a small town thing I think. Or lower 48. I heard them when I lived in Joplin and I can remember church bells a few other times. But not in Alaska. I posted some pics of Anchorage to make you homesick.
ReplyDeleteI hear the church bells often. The Colfax Lutheran church rings them at 5 pm and again at 8 pm. Not sure if they ring early in the am. Maybe we'll have to ask one of our library patrons that lives in Colfax.
ReplyDeleteI drove by your house tonight coming back from Balsam Lake!
They ring the bells at the church I go to, Chapel by the Sea, after Sunday school. The children in the todler room get to pull the rope.
