I felt good when I confessed last week about the cat licking the pumpkin pie. And you know? They do say that confession is good for the soul! So I'm going to share another confession now.
You ever been to the Big House? The clink? The slammer? The Joint? Been a guest of the State? Did you ever get 3 hots and a cot? Been behind bars? No? Well I have. Yep, I have been in jail. I spent a total of about 4 hours. It was one of the most boring 4 hours of my life. So boring that I was scared straight!
Many years ago I had a unpaid parking violation. I had a car in Anchorage but I worked in Dillingham. So I didn't think that I needed to worry about that $100.00 fine. The state of Alaska wanted their money so they put a bench warrant out for my arrest. While living in Dillingham, a friend ( Read, loser boyfriend) was in jail and on my lunch break I went to visit him at the cop shop. I had to sign my name and the cops ran it through the system and low and behold? I was arrested on the spot and put in jail. It was pay your $100.00 now or go to jail. Well, I didn't have the money so I went to jail. They made me take my shoe laces out of my shoes. I was also wearing a hoodie and they wanted me to take the string out of that. I refused! I told them that I was not that despondent over this and I was pretty sure I wasn't going to hang myself with that 1 foot string! I won that argument! I would have never ever gotten that string back in!
It was a Saturday so they moved all the drunks out of the drunk tank and put me in there. Boy oh boy was that bad! I have a problem with smells and it smelled of vomit and urine. I let them know that in no way was I going stay in this room! I needed out NOW! I was moved to a little cell and the drunks back to the drunk tank. I was allowed my 1 phone call and I was trying to call work so that I could barrow $100.00 bucks from the cash drawer but nobody was picking up the phone! I was a pest and they soon got tired of me asking for the phone so they just gave me a phone so I could keep trying work. Finally I got hold of a coworker and had them bring the money and got myself out of jail. At work, when you borrowed money from the cash drawer you had to explain why. I put down " Posted bail " That sure caused a flurry of phone calls from the main office in Anchorage!
Did I learn a lesson? Yes and no. A few years later for vacation I drove to CO and on the way back, in that great state of WY, where I was doing 95mph a cop pulled me over. I argued my case that it was a straight road, clear day and I could see for miles and miles! The cop just said "Didn't see me now did you? I shut up then and took my $200.00 fine. But I lived in AK not WY! So I wasn't that worried about that one. WY sent me a notice that I had a bench warrant for my arrest! I did pay it off about 3 years later with a sorry note that it had taken so long to pay.
A few years later I got a speeding a speeding ticket in Anchorage. I paid that off that week! I have been a law abiding citizen since.
The state where you live now puts all court appearances online as a matter of public record. I'm not in there anymore, but I had a speeding ticket that I had to go to court for to pay the fine. When you searched for me, my name came up there - BUT that was 11 years ago and it's not in their system anymore (yay!).
ReplyDeleteOther than that, I've been very good. Haven't even had to go to visit someone. :)
I think it's odd that they will put your address in the paper if you have a violation or such. I don't know if I want my address out there for all!
ReplyDeleteWow, true confessions! You're brave. I think the closest I've come to being in trouble with the police was a totally stupid stunt in college. I spent a vacation break with a friend and while there was invited to a big 'party', so we went and the police raided the place. I was hiding in a closet and I thought - never again am I going to someones 'party' that I don't know very well.
ReplyDeleteI use to work as Clerk of Court for the village of Colfax. I learned a lot about village and county citations. K is right, your court appearances and any citations are listed online and anyone can access them. Nothing is secret in Wisconsin.
ReplyDeleteHey jailbird - still proud to have you for a sister. I had forgotten the hoodie string part. Sounds like you had the jail personnel wrapped around your finger.
ReplyDeleteOooh! That reminds me... I have a ticket I haven't paid from Anchorage...
