Yes, I'm a book snob.

I have loved reading ever since I was a kid. I remember when I would get my .75 cents a week allowance I would go to the local store and buy a grape soda ( the best ever! ) and a comic book. My favorite comic books were Richie Rich and Casper and also Wendy the witch. I would sit out on the front porch and read and drink my soda ( Dad would not let me drink grape soda in the house, He hated the smell of it.) I think I was about in 1st grade when I read them. Then I started to read Nancy Drew ( in her speedy red roadster!) and by the 6th grade I was reading Watership Down and was looking for more to read.

This is were the snob part comes in. I think comic books have their place in reading. I really do. I think that comic books are what started my love of reading. But, I have a real hard time accepting comic books as a book. At the library we get Archie and Jughead comics but they are in a hardback form. Also barbie doll is a hardback comic book. Teenage mutant ninja turtles comics are in a hard back. They are still comics but the library now has to pay more money for them as they are a hardcover. And it is still a comic book! Archie and Jughead!? I mean come on! I don't think they belong in the library.

OK. I'm off my soap box now.

  1. They may not be real "books",but if that what starts some young boy or girl to reading, then you should have them there. I like comics better than commercialized "books" like Barbie and "My Little Pony" etc.

  2. Comic books, Manga, Anime...that's what the kids want to read now. It's a different world. Kinda makes ya feel old doesn't it?

  3. I remember having Little Lulu comics when I was a kid. There was another one, but I can't remember what it was anymore.

Mom and Dad would buy me books in Eau Claire, and by time we got home, I'd have at least one completely finished. They took me to the library more often after a few trips of that. :)

  4. These books are great for kids who are reluctant readers. The task ofreading a 'real book' is a little too daunting for kids who have a harder time with conceptual thinking or just reading in general. Once kids start on those I would hope they wouldn't stay, but catch the reading bug and go on to some meatier titles
