I have finished The Book of Ruth by Jane Hamilton. I read all kinds of books, but lately it seems that I have been in a rut reading the same genre of books. My friend K. and I were just talking the other day that we have had a slew of our style of books that just have not been good. Just OK. So when I was dusting at work the other day I picked out 3 books. The Book of Ruth
was one of them. This was a real good book. I wish I was eloquent and was able to write an incredible review but I'm not.
Ruth, the main character has a learning disability and as she says about herself, her hair is about the only thing nice about her appearance. She is picked on and bullied by fellow students and teachers and also sadly by her Mom. Her younger brother is very smart so her Mom has placed all her hope in the son. Ruth struggles to fit in and when out of high school meets a man who is also lost. Ruth can see his goodness and marries him and has a child by him. But they are too poor to live on their own so live at home with her angry mean Mom. It ends bad. That's all I can say without telling it all. Idon't mean the book ends bad. It ends on hope.
The book makes me want to be a more compassionate person towards others that have a different economical, social and educational background then me. Not in a pity kind of way, just in a be kinder to people way. I can smile and engage in a conversation with a few of the young woman in my church that may have a Ruth like life. Not be so impatience with them. I need to let them be them and stop being judgemental.

Judging others is a hard one. We are all guilty of judging. The Book of Ruth sounds really, really good. I always wanted to read that book, but never got around to it. Now I think I'll read it. Thanks Krissy
ReplyDeleteThat sounds good. I really like books that give you a nug in life, that really amount to something and not just a quick story that leaves you empty. I call those kind of books 'twinkie' books. This one sounds like a hamburger kind of book, one you can sink your teeth into and be satisifed with.
ReplyDeleteI'm reading several Mrs. Pollifax books - you should go back to them and reread them. They are kind of like romances (all the same) but with different locations and people. They are easy reading but still fun.
