Haying time.

The other day, goat lady came by and checked out the girls. She said that they looked real good and then also recommend that I started giving them a higher protein hay. All winter I have been giving them sweet grass, in WI that's a mix of Timothy hay and grass and some of this and that. That was fine, but with them going to be little milkers, they will need more. Goat lady gave me a name and number of a guy that sells Alfalfa hay. I went and got 500lbs this morning. In the back of my truck that's 10 bales at 50lbs each. All for 30 bucks.

You know that saying "Roll around in the hay?" I don't think that they ever did that. Hay is way, way to poky and scratchy and just all around pain to deal with. It does smell nice though.

I have another cat now. Her name is Willow, but I have no picture of her as Harvey has declared that she must stay under the bed in the spare bedroom. Kind of like a Middle East conflict going on in that room. I am NATO and have kicked Harvey out of the "talks" (outside) and have made the house Switzerland.

  1. I saw a pic of Willow on Kelli's blog. She's a pretty cat. Too bad Harvey is a bully. All that for $30? You know up here that would cost something outrageous like $500 or so.

  4. WOW - wish hay was that cheap down here and good alfalfa hay is getting harder to come by. From what JC said, you lose about 25% of protein in grass hay just by cutting it and of course it drops the longer it sits. By feeling alfalfa we don't have to grain very heavy to get the protein.

  10. I'm jealous! Alf is $18 a bale here! So, I don't feed it. I supplement with alf pellets instead for a little extra protein for my goaties. It works. They still get their regular hay and any branches that blow down and all the browse they will eat when I stake them out.

Congrats on the kitty! Give her time to settle in. Harvey will adjust. I promise. If you have any cat Q's, just shoot me an email!
