Way back when.

Remember when I said that I would post about rocks? Well, it's your lucky day!

A long time ago, in a far away place called Unalaska Alaska. (A.K.A. Dutch Harbor ) I lived and worked there for almost 3 years. My friend Linda was good friends with some people that lived way way far away on the end of Unalaska Island at a place called Chernofsky Sheep Ranch. It was a 200 acre working sheep ranch ( Here's a map of Unalaska . This map wont show Chernofsky harbor where the ranch was at. Look between Mount Aspid and Lone Peak on the north side of the island. That will give you an ideal of where it was at.)

We were there for about a week. One of the fun things we did was walk to a beach called Amethyst beach that was a few miles away from the ranch and look for amethyst. It was pretty amazing, there were chunks of amethyst just laying around and alone the cliffs you could see veins of amethyst running down. You could find some high quality rock if you really wanted to take a pick axe and do some serious rock hounding. I'm more of a lazy rock hound. I need to stub my toe to find it.

  1. Those are beautiful! I love rocks and have used some agate that we have found and polished in my jewelry making. But how fun it would be to find something like that.

  2. I always knew you went out there, but I didn't know that you got amethyst. We have been super busy with family in town. We were out for 11 hours today snowmachining up at Petersville. I'll probably post about that tomorrow.

  3. We got some rocks like that when we traveled out to Colorado & South Dakota. For a while my son was really into rocks. Did I ever tell you C & T have watched the TV show Goldfever (panning for gold) for 15 years...I swear!

    Who's Linda?

  4. Krissy,Krissy,Krissy - We hiked to Agate Beach but coming back we went along the really "fun" way by area with fallen rocks that could find the amethyst in pockets or broken off. The beach were basically small, rounded, sand polished rocks but the bigger chunks were along the way. Some of the best rocks I got were on way home when someone would be tired of hauling so many and would chuck some of their take. My best find was 2 Japanese fishing balls that had washed into junk along the beaches and in the grass (I think that was the time went to ranch with Val for two weeks. Still want to go back sometime and hike over to Pacific side. I need to drag out pics of wild horses to show Taylor sometime. Linda
