Books

I was asked by a lot of you on who's D. Well, if you really need to know D is a guy that comes into the library to use the computers. He's single, my age, likes dogs, real quite and has a job. That's about all I really know about him.

Lets get back to books, much more interesting I think!

For those that read Edgar Sawtellle. I read it, it was not a bad book but I sure didn't see what the hype was all about. I thought that there was a lot left not answered. I found out a few days ago that it was a Oprah book club book. That might be where the hype is coming from. All the sheeple that follow her. I don't think that she read the book! I read some F.A.Q.s that the author addressed and then the book made more sense, but I don't think that you should have to ask the author what he meant! That should come out in the story!

I was asked for some of my favorite authors. So here's a list

1. Linda Howard. (Romance/Suspense)

2. Nora Roberts. (Romance/Suspense) also, she writes as JD Robb.

3. Larry Nivens. (Sci/Fi)

4. Eric Flint. (Sci/Fi)

5. Octavia Butler. ( Sci/Fi)

6. Karin Slaughter. ( Suspense ....also MOM? Don't read! Violent! Start with book 1!)

7. Diana Gabaldon. ( Time travel/romance series, start with book 1! )

8. Nelson DeMille. (Suspense)

9. Richard North Patterson. (Suspense)

10. Zoe Sharp. ( Suspense, it's a series, start with book 1!)

11. Barbara Kingsolver.

12. John Irving.

13. Nicholas Evans.

14. Dean Koontz. His last 10 books or so are just down right good. If you have never read him I would recommend that you start off with " From The Corner Of His Eye" and " Life Expectancy"

" As long as there is cake, there is hope"

So that was the list of some that I like.

How about a list of who I can't stand?

1. James Patterson. Poor poor writing, IMHO.

2. Nicholas Sparks. Gag me, He's so sweet that you need a insulin shot to read him!

3. Danielle Steel.

Got a author that you think is great? Let me know, I'm always up for new books.

  1. Hi Kris!

I lived in Anchorage for 3 1/2 years and 2 years in Soldotna. I miss the restaurants too! Esp. the Sourdough Mining Company in Anchorage and Sal's in Soldotna!

For authors, my MIL is a now retired, award winning romance author. In respect for family privacy, I won't divulge who she is. Again, she is retired. My husband, the Corporate Prince, is an aspiring author with a contract.

As for favorite authors, I love Robin Hobb for Fantasy, Patricia McConnell for dog behavior, Cherry Hill for basic horse stuff I don't have the patience to explain to my kids, and Shakespeare if I have to read a "classic". That's just to name a few, although we have quite the library here at home.

My verification word is: stray. How appropriate! I feel like a lost stray here in the lower 48!

  2. Hi Krissy,
For pure entertainment I love to read and re-read the Mrs. Polifax mysteries by Dorothy Gilman,{no relation}.

Some of her books were turned into "made for tv" movies but none of them measured up to the movies playing in my head when I would immerse myself in the world of Mrs. Polifax.

    Blessings always, JG

  3. Kris, you just crack me up! Nicholas Sparks, you need to take insulin....I must be diabetic then, hee, hee.

Just so you all know, "D" is mysterious! Really quiet type of man, but with many interests. All I can say about him is that he really likes Ebay...he would come in and always show us all his unusual purchases! When I think of D, I think of:

"Never judge a book by it's cover."

  4. I think you might not like the authors I like. :)

Douglas Coupland - Microserfs is still probably my favorite book. I also really like all his other books.

Wicked - Gregory Maguire is tied for my other favorite book. I have the audio book, too, and the narrator is phenomenal.

Life of Pi by - Yann Martel

Sense and Sensibility - Jane Austen will always hold a special place in my heart. :)

I also tend to like the travel memoirs, since I don't get to travel much anymore.

  5. K- I have all the Gregory Maguire books, I loved " Confessions of as Ugly Stepsister" not so much " Mirror Mirror". Also read all the "Wicked" books.
Life of Pi! What can I say! That book was GREAT! LOVE LOVE LOVE it.
My Mom and sisters read it. They also liked it. Jave Austen, She is timeless. If I put all the authors that I like the list would go on and on.

JG- Dorthy Gilman! read all of her books. I have read over and over "Nuns in the closet" That book can me LOL!

Oregonsunshine. I will pick up Robin Hobb and give that a try.I take it that Patricia McConnell and Cherry Hill are NF writers?
I so,so miss the Moose's Tooth in Anchorage. And the honey corn muffins from Sourdough Mining Comp? I can eat a lot of them!
I have read a lot of romance so I probably have read her. That's neat that you have a author in the family! And your CP too!

  6. "Mirror Mirror" was a dud, wasn't it?

I loved "Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister," too.

Some day I'll see the Broadway production of Wicked. I've tried to get tickets when they've come to Minneapolis, but they sell out so quickly.

I also forgot to add David Sedaris makes me laugh out loud.

I haven't been reading nearly as much as I used to, but I'm hoping to change that this year. We're about four blocks from a library, and I'd like to make use of it this summer!

Lately though, I've been reading Microsoft exam texts. THOSE you really wouldn't like. :) (and how funny - comas is in my word verification - very apt for the Microsoft texts).

  7. Kris! You forgot Virginia Lanier! She is fantastic, for those who don't know of her. Janet Evanovich is Spectacular also!!

  8. JG - is it coincidence that you meantioned Pollifax - because I just wrote about liking those books on my blog. I love them too! I never see you around but I did see "Jeff" the kid who lived on Alicia's street who got stuck in the mud and had fire dept have to get him out. Remember that?

  9. Hi Kris,

Maybe "Chanting" and "Dragon's Fire" will ring a bell?

With Robin Hobb, start with Assassin's Apprentice. I promise it's worth a read. I read that first trilogy every year. Many of her other books intertwine so definitely start at the beginning.

I read a lot. Not everything I've read is listed on my booklist. That's just the books I've read since starting my blog. I need to go add to it today now that I think of it.

You know, there's a Badass Coffee stand here locally. Yes, THE Badass! The owners have family here in Oregon, hence our one stand!

There's also a Newfeldt's that opened up downtown. I haven't tried it yet, but it seems to be similar to the one in Mountain View. I'm sure I'd know if I saw their menu.

  11. I LOVE Diana Gabladon Outlander series and try to get everyone to read it!! lol I have to check out some of your other authors. I made a New Years resolution to read only "classics" but... NYR are meant to be broken, right? :)

  12. Is "Jeff" one of the "ding-a-lings" that think it's OK to walk on the mud flats? It has been so cold that I haven't even been to Freddies! Good thing I had a few staples in the house. My big freezer died while I was on vacation so I didn't have that resource to use. Oh well! It is getting warmer so i will have to bring the things from my porch into the freeaer in the fridge. Blessings, JG

  13. LOUIE LAMOUR!!!!! (before him and many years ago ZANE GRAY was my favorite after I graduated from Nancy Drew to Hardy Boys!!!).
    JACK LONDON....
    JOHN GRISHAM....Love that man

Got turned on to ANN RULE by my cousins wife when was in AZ over New Years. Am reading "Green River Runs Red". Can still visualize in 1985 when was walking from Red Lion at Sea Tac up Pac Hwy to the Thirteen Coins to eat one evening. Up pulls a van and that is when Laurie, one of my airline co-workers in Alaska, told me about the Green River Killer and that the "ladies" worked this area - boy did we hot foot it on up to Thirteen Coins and took a cab back!!! Anxious to read "The Stranger Beside Me" about Ted Bundy. She has written a lot of books and if you don't know about her, just goodle up "Ann Rule" and go to her website. I think between her books I will need to read some Jack London books to get back on track!!!
