Poor Abby.

Last week we had some warm weather and today it warmed up and is going to be in the high 30s this weekend. I like it! But there is a down side.
With this warm weather it makes a crust of ice on the snow and Abby has a nice size cut on her front left paw. She was favoring it and whenever I would try and get a look at it she would slink off. She hates her paws messed with. The other day we had a "Come to Jesus meeting" and I got a good look at her paw. She is missing a chunk on her pad, it's about the size of a dime. It's not deep it just looks like the top layer got shaved off. Poor Abby. I gave her some extra pets and a treat. I'm trying to take her for walks on the plowed parts of the driveway and keep her off the crusty snow.

  1. Poor baby...I'm sure that hurts. How about some doggy booties? Is there such a thing?

  2. There is, but she wont walk with them on. She just flops over on her side.

  3. She used to live in Alaska and was much tougher - she sure is getting soft. I remember she could run several miles uphill on that gravel road to Arctic Valley.

  4. Will she tolerate paw wax or booties?

Freya has been licking between a couple of toes. I really can't get a good look in there to see what's going on. I do wonder if it's a sliver from the bark out back.

  5. Aw, poor dog. I was going to suggest doggie booties, too, even though I think they're hilariously funny looking.

Hopefully she heals up quickly! Poor thing!

  6. Aaaaw, poor doggy...if you don't cover it with something, won't she just keep licking at it?

  7. OS, I never heard of paw wax?
When I came home tonight from work her pad is looking better. I willbe with her all day on Sat/Sun so I will be able to watch her licking. On monday, if I have to, I can put on the hated bucket!

  8. You are ALASKAN and have never heard of paw wax? OMG! Maybe you should be disowned! j/k LOL!

I first encountered this wonderful substance down at Alaska Mill and Feed. It's pretty popular with the musher crowd. Paw wax gives a barrier and extra grip on ice. I'm sure that layer also helps prevent cuts and cracks.

Unfortunately, Freya does not like having her paws messed with. And sometimes, when you question their heritage (she comes from the Matsu valley, after all!) you don't push the issue too much. Freya gets muzzled for nail trims because she gets a little "toothy" looking. A lot of Alaskans have asked if she's a wolf. Maybe, maybe not! No DNA test for that available yet!

  9. Poor Abby. I've put Vitamin E (oil from capsules) on Gigner's pads before. It is a sticky oil and is kind of bitter tasting. She won't lick it.

I think you should describe your 'Come to Jesus' meetings.
