This summer the power went out a few times. The longest it went out in the summer was for 19 hours! ( That never happened to me in AK! ) Back then I was worried about my pig in the freezer.
Well the power went out tonight for a little over 2 hours. The temp in the house went from 66 to 63 and I started to worry about what if the power stays out for 19 hours like it was in the summer? I was much much more worried now then I was then. Pipes freezing and all that stuff. Much more costly then meat in the freezer. So that made me think about getting a generator or maybe a furnaces that burns both wood and LP.
I have the heat now turned up to 70 just in case the power goes back out. I might nudge it up to 72 before I go back to bed.
At times like this I wish I was married and that I didn't have to do all the worrying alone! Nor make the decision alone.
Dad and Mom? I'm moving back home. Set up the spare bedroom!
I Jokes!
Sandy, did you see that Mom and Dad are due back in AK March 11? Wasn't sure if you got the mesg.

Bite your tongue. Are you sure you want to be married to "did you hear that drip?" "that sounds like the heat didn't kick on as quickly as it should." "what's that sound."
ReplyDeleteAlthough maybe I worry less because he worries so much?
Your furnace does heat with LP - why would you need electricity to run that? I thought that was the beauty of your furnace was that it was both LP and wood burning.
ReplyDeleteKrissy .. I trhought I'd sent you an email responding to the M dot and D dot info... Sandy
ReplyDeleteI can't figure out if I sent the email or what on this blog thingie... can you send me an email using a personal email addy? I thought that was what I replied to but now wonder... Sandy
ReplyDeleteSandy, check your glass float web page. I just sent you a e-mail with my address.
ReplyDeleteKris,
ReplyDeleteAre you on a well or city water? If you're worried about the pipes, leave one faucet on with an ever so slight stream. It shouldn't freeze then.
I never lost power for more than a few minutes to a couple hours in Alaska myself. In both Soldotna and Anchorage, I managed to live on the same grid as the hospital, respectively. That was rather nice!
Our furnace is gas and it needs electricity to kick in when the temp. gets too low.
ReplyDeleteWe had power outage too. We had just got done watching an old murder mystery movie when the lights started flickering and the everything went black. I heard the kids yell from upstairs.
Ken took the boys around the block to see if power was on at other places and everyone was dark.
It made for an interesting night.
Just remember that not all husbands worry about that sort of thing. Mine always says its fine. As the cold air from under the house is cooling our downstairs bathroom thru the hole by the drainpipe. Or when the furnace shuts down in the middle of the winter because he forgot to change the filter. :)
ReplyDeleteOS, I have a well, no power, no water. I learned that when the power was off for 19 hrs in the summer. I have water stashed now.
ReplyDeleteYou get thirsty when you know you have no running water!
Am a firm beliver if you live in the country in a cold climate area, you have a wood stove (to save on electric or gas cost) AND
ReplyDeletehave heat when power is out. Working for an electric REA in Colo, I am surprised at the folks that move here and way out in boonies/mountain and don't have woodstove backup (they are usually the ones that don't want trees cut/trimmed and won't pay for underground) and are the 1st ones to complain when power goes out because of tree on line!!! If you worry about pipes freezing, open doors under your sink etc to get some warm air to them. Always call your electric company when power goes off (even if your neighbors are out) so the utility can track who all is out. And get a wood stove!!!!
I have to second the wood stove. My parents had one in their kitchen that was an antique. It was fantastic - and cheap for when the heating oil would get super expensive. They've upgraded to a pellet stove, though.
