What's wrong with this picture? Is it maybe that there is a baby goat in the house? This is the baby boy. I have named him Basil. I bottle feed this one. He thinks that I'm his momma.
Today the goat lady came by. She gave both Juju and Maggie shots and also wormed them. And then the painful part. All three babies got their little horn buds burned off. I had to hold them very tight while she held the burn thing to their heads and counted to 12 ( For each horn bud) When done, I stuck a bottle full of warm milk in their mouth and they sucked them dry. Well, Sage wont take the bottle so I put her back with Juju and she went right up the the milk bar and nursed. I watched them, and within 10 minutes or so, they where skipping about.The broody hen. I try and see if she has any eggs under her but she is ninja quick and I don't want to have my hands pecked to the bone. Which makes me wonder. When a rooster and a chicken do their thing (wink) is enough sperm deposited to fertilize all the eggs that the hen will lay, as she lays one every other day. Or is there a whole bunch of eggs in the hen and all the eggs get fertilized at the same time and she just lays them one at a time? Or is the rooster visiting her daily? Also, I'm going to start calling my chickens chooks. That's what they are called over in Australia. I like how that word sounds

ReplyDeleteI went to Patty's book signing for Carina today. It was held on the 2nd floor of the Kincaid Chalet. It seemed like she had lots of folks stop by. I am looking forward to reading her latest book. Did the library order one? Alicia was collecting the money for Patty - she looks great AND she made her "World Famous" White Choc & Mac cookies! YUMMY, YUMMY, YUMMY!
Does the library have any books about chickens? They might let you check one out. :) OR you could check with the extension service. Keep us posted. Blessings.
I love your baby goat names. You've got a food theme it seems, although I don't think any of them will end up in your stew pot. I used to have to hold puppies at the vet clinic while they docked tails and cut off dew claws. It seems horrible while they do it, but they are back to no pain just 1 minute later while Mama licks them and comforts them.

ReplyDeleteDad thinks all your hens have been visited by the rooster and when your broody leaves the nest to eat or whatever, the other hens lay their fertilized eggs in her nest for her to hatch and raise

When the roo does his thing, there's usually enough to fertilize the hens eggs for a week.
ReplyDeletePut on a pair of work or gardening gloves and move her when it's dark. She'll be docile and sleepy. Use a head lamp, don't turn on the overhead lights so she stays mellow and sleepy.

ReplyDeleteThe chicken thing kind of grosses me out. I don't like to think of eating eggs when I know they could become baby chicks. That's another reason I always preferred not to have roosters.
I love your cat photo. Why do cats always stretch way out when they are hot? My cat was sleeping the same way today.
