Sad news.

Three little babiesI think this hen went broody. I tried to move her and almost lost my hand! She has been sitting there for two days now.
Milk bar open for business. Nothing like milking a wet, sticky cold teat.

Tonight when I went to do a head count on the chickens I only counted 11 chickens. I have 12. After feeding the babies, milking the girls and putting the chickens up for the night I got the flashlight out and started looking for my missing hen.

I found her pretty quick. She was dead and this time I know what killed my hen. The wheel barrel killed her. I know, I laughed too! I didn't mean to but come on! She got killed by a wheel barrel? At night time I put a board up against the door into the goat pen and then push the wheel barrel up against that. It helps keep the cool night air from getting in and also keeps the babies (and mommas) from getting out. In the morning I move it all out of the way but it's still in the big goat yard. How it tipped over and how the hen got crushed by it is beyond me.

  1. So do we have baby chicks on the way?
The babies look like they get along. How are Maggie and JuJu doing with them?
Is there any baby swapping going on?

  2. So are both babies nursing from JuJu? Or just the bigger male? Too bad about the chicken. It's possible the goats are pushing it around, but still you'd think a chicken would be a bit quicker and not get squashed.

  4. Bummer Krissy!

So, that one hen doesn't mind being in with the goats overnight? Wonder if she would peck and hiss at the goats too?

  5. Sounds like you've got a barnyard clue game going. It was the goat and the wheelbarrow outside the goat pen.

  6. What - no dead picture of the smashed chicken - you surprise me!!! wheb down at ranch getting a load of water, watched the new baby goats - they have about 60 and more popping out. Am going to "kid" nap the black and white baby - he is sure a character and big - in fact he had to be pulled.

  10. Poor little chicken! We lost one of our Polish the other day. I have no idea why other than she never seemed as thrifty as my other Polish that came with her. In your case, perhaps there was a bit of wind that tipped the wheel barrow over?

As for your broody hen, if you want to move her, do it at night. They're very docile then.

Blogger isn't liking my ID again today... *sigh*
