In the fall time, this part of WI has a Asian Beetle infestation. I didn't think that it was that bad. For a week or so I would suck them up in the vacuum cleaner a few times a day. Now that it's winter and the temp at my house has gotten below -0- each night for the past few weeks you would think that all the bugs would be gone. But you would be thinking wrong! I'm wrong. Each day I find about 5 or so of these crawling on the windows.
I put them in this cup and flick, flick, flick, out they go into the freezing cold. Sometimes they can really hang on to the cup so I have to do some serious flicking!
Don't feel sorry for them. They may look like cute little lady bugs, but they aren't! They have icky white spots on their heads. ( So what this really means is that they are hiding in my house in the cracks and stuff! Shudder!)
But this brings of the question. How do ticks survive here over the winter in WI? I mean,it's been real cold for for awhile. If we have no ticks in AK, I don't see why there are ticks in WI. I think that the winters are pretty much the same, other then how long they last.
I don't know how ticks survive the cold. Maybe they are in a larve state deep in the ground or something. Maybe we should ask a librarian on Ask Away.
ReplyDeleteI don't think they winter over in their adult state, cause sometimes when they first come out in spring and then it will freeze hard one more time it will kill off some. I wish they would all die!!!! They have to be one of the nastiest little critters alive.
We have a few asian beetles that buzz around too. They are attracted to our light by the frig. Sometimes one will land in our hair.
Those nasty beetles wake up in January and then walk all over your ceiling, windows & walls. Lately, I've been finding then dead on kitchen floor. I'm thinking kitty is finding them during the day and then is playing with them until she pulls them apart and kills them. I keep finding bits and parts scattered all over...icky!
ReplyDeleteI don't like bugs. I'm glad I live in AK when I see your bucket 'o bugs. Some day though I will live in MO where there are even more bugs. shudder
ReplyDeleteOooh! And don't forget that there aren't any fleas north of Juneau!
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, we didn't get a hard enough frost to kill those buggers off until all that snow dumped on us here in December. Ugh! Frontline has become my best friend!
