I know that I still have to wait a few months till it's summer, but that doesn't stop me from dreaming! Or should I say, not really dreaming. I lay in bed at night and can't get to sleep cause I am planting my garden in my head. I had to scale back. I had so much planted (in my mind!)
I need to get some seed catalogs so I have an ideal what I really want.
Here's my list. ( I like list, I feel very organized!)
1. 3 type of tomato plants. 1 will be for canning, 1 will be a cherry or a grape type and then just a good eating tomato, you know, for sandwiches, hamburgers and the like.
2. Beets. I love my pickled beets. I only did 5 pints and I ate them up fast. So I will need to plant enough for a case.
3. Green beans. As I now know what the difference is between a pole and a bush bean I need to decide which one. I want to eat them fresh and then freeze them for winter. (leaning towards the pole bean)
4. Zucchini. I love fresh zucchini pan fried with some garlic and dill.
5. Dill, Rosemary, Basil (Love dill, I put dill on a lot of stuff and I need it for my pickles)
6. A salad mix.
7. Jalapenos ( I will pickle some )
8. Horseradish?
If you have a type of plant that I listed, that you really like and think it's super duper and just might be the next best thing to cake, let me know! Am I missing something? I'm not doing cucumbers as I can get them real cheep and a lot at the same time and just spend one day in making pickles. Also as a single person, it's easy for me to just buy a 10lbs bag of potatoes and onions.

I say grow pole beans, they are much easier to pick then bush beans. Bush beans you have to squat down low and look for the beans, where pole beans will climb and you just stand there and pick the beans. I'll be glad to share how we set up the "pole" for the beans to grow!
ReplyDeleteThats why I'm leaning towards the ploe beans!
ReplyDeleteHave you tried kolrabi? I love it raw because it is so juicy and crunchy! Can you grow watermelon in WI? Or any other kind of melon for that matter? Do you do corn or it that cheap in WI? I love creamed potato's and fresh baby peas. I am hungry and i just had red salmon for dinner. Maybe i will go grab another bite. Blessings, Krissy, jg
ReplyDeleteWish we had enough space for a garden!
ReplyDeleteHowever, we will be moving come end of June, so no garden again this year. Maybe a container of lettuce after we get moved.
How about summer squash?
One of our favorite veg. is corn, but it takes up a lot of room. K. plants a vast amount so if you feel the hankerin for corn think of us. (Those who come help us harvest and pick in August get to take some processed corn home ready to be stached in the freezer.)
ReplyDeleteAnother thing we plant a lot of is winter squash. Which also takes a lot of room, but K. and both love it.
I also plant pole beans like Taintert. If you are interested in that, I have found one of the best varieties to be Blue Lake Pole Beans.
Happy Garden Dreaming!
My only suggestion is plant no more than you are willing to water and weed. I know nothink about it! (you have to say it like Colonol Klink from Hogans Heroes)
ReplyDeleteSweet Peas - Yum fresh and steamed just a little (ugh - can't stand to look at can of peas!!) Eleanor always planted hers on St. Pats day - don't know about WI. I think the year I moved back from AK, Grandad had me plant a row of Blue Lake beans - yum yum. Do you have rhubarb plants - can't wait to get some started (but have to also remind myself can't get too carried away as we haul our water!!). Before can do anyhing, gotta figure out how to cheaply fence horses away from areas want to plant (seeing we live in the middle of the pasture!!) And NO I have intention of having a real "yard" !!
