Sunday Confession.

If you know me or have been reading this blog then you know that sometimes I really pull a stupid stunt. I do not really know why, but dumb ideas and I go hand in hand.

Many years ago, back when I worked for a fish processing factory, I pulled a stupid stunt. I worked a night shift at the fish factory and I would wear long johns under my jeans. Working the night shift could become very cold. You stand in cold water, have cold running water running all the time and I rode my bike to and from work. I also wore an apron to keep all the fish guts and blood off and wore cotton liner gloves with rubber gloves on to keep my hands warm and dry. ( That is a knee slapper right there! Your gloves would have a hole in seconds and then you would have wet, cold hands till break time )

So there I was, working and I got an itch. Oh how I tried to ignore the itch but the more I ignored it the itchier it got. This itch was on my butt. High up on the butt, about two inches below where butt meets lower back. It was my right cheek. I tried to scratch it but remember, I am wearing cotton lined rubber gloves and also jeans and long johns. I was not able to get that itch. I had a
brilliant idea. I had a sharp knife with a nice sharp point. ( You can see where this is going cannot you?) I took that very sharp knife and "poked" the itch. Ah, just a little harder and all would be good. So I "poked" a little harder. OUCH! I jammed that knife point right in to my butt! I left the line and went into the restroom to take a look. Not good. I had a good size bloody spot that went through the long johns and the jeans. I got some gauze pads and had a co-worker help clean the wound. I was a little concerned as I was gutting fish and who knows what I jammed in to the wound. We put some stuff on it that really stung badly ( That must be good right?) and with some duct tape on the pad I was good to go.

It was very tender, it swelled up a bit and was hot to the touch, but that went away after a few days. I just was not going to go to the doctors and tell them how I happened to stab myself in the butt! I have some pride. I also never did that again. But I did slice off the tip of my left index finger working the gutting line. But that kind of stuff came with the job, working fast, cold stiff hands and sharp knives, bound to have an injury or two.

P.S. I now have a funky nail on that finger.

  1. ahhhh that brings back the good old days of working on the slime line! Rock music blaring and brain-dead co-workers sliming away, scrape, scrape, scrape for 1.75 hours until next 15 minute break. Those were the glory days!

  6. You make my day with your stories and or ranting/raving!!! Well... Harley, my 4yr old gray QH, and I had our last beer together Friday night. Sold him to a roper-that runs a big ranch-for a rich Texan- down by the Spanish Peaks. They are always roping at our friends that have indoor arena Taylor goes to down by Walsenburg so will be neat to see Harley progress but I sure do miss him already. TJ & Scooters were looking for him all over the pature this weekend.
