Pretty as a picture

In the three years that I have lived here, my lilacs have never really put on a show. So lacking in pretties that I have thought about cutting them down as I was getting tired of mowing around them. This year, they took off and have really put out the flowers. Glad that I did not chop them down!
I cut some and brought them inside. They smell wonderful, to bad they don't last long as a cut flower.

  1. My lilacs didn't bloom for several years, but now they do every year. I found out that moose were nibbling the flower buds off in the fall/winter prior to spring. Lilacs set their buds the fall before they bloom so you have to protect them...maybe deer have been eating yours. Ours do good now because they finally got tall enough that the moose can't take the buds off. At least that's what Jeff Lowenfells (ADN Master Gardener)says.

  3. Very pretty! I love seeing how it's still spring in other parts of the country. It's been summer here for a month now at least!

  4. very nice! I love the smell of lilacs. I havent planted any because of what Patty said about the moose. I think also maybe some fertilizer helps?? maybe lime or something helps promote flowering. Might be worth googling!!

  5. Lilacs are some of my favorite flowers but they are short lived. To get more blooms next year, trim off all the dead blooms this year after they are done.
