Day 4 of the road trip.

And another correction! I left AK on the 18th not the 19th. I'm off by a day. Oh well. How I know this is that I arrived here in Wisconsin on a Wednesday. Today is my 1 year anniversary.

Day 4. Lloydminster to Brandon ( Still in Canada, 490 miles )

We got up ( Or I should say, I got up) at about 7am. Looked outside, Yikes! It was snowing and blowing. Almost a white out condition. I took a shower and got all dressed up in winter garb. The wind had drifted in such a way that I could not open the driver side door. I had to stomp, stomp, stomp the snow down so that I could open it up. I started the truck and went back inside to wait.
I did not try to be quite and my sister soon was up. We talked about that maybe we should just wait and ride out the storm.. We watched the morning news and it said that the storm was passing and that some roads were still closed and showed all the cars and trucks in the ditch.

The route that I choose would have us dropping south real fast after Saskatoon. So we decided to go. My sister hopped in the shower and I pushed Abby outside ( She does not like blowing snow ) and got her in the truck. I took the truck and drove back and forth in front of our room so that we would have a better path to take our stuff out. After I got the snow knocked down I went and got gas and found a plowed road and took Abby for a walk. ( She was not a happy camper )

Being that the weather was ish-ma we decided to have a nice breakfast, not McDonald's. We found a place and after eating and drinking pots of hot tea we couldn't delay anymore.

The trip from Lloydminster to Saskatoon was bad. It was pretty much ice all the way. Top speed was maybe 25/30 MPH . There was hardly any traffic on the road ( Huh, I wonder why?)
In my rear view mirror I saw a big rig jack knife and go off the road! That was odd to see, like seeing it in slow-mo.

At Saskatoon we dropped down to highway 11 and went south to Regina. The roads after Saskatoon started to get nice. One of the two lanes seemed to always be free of ice so we would change lanes to get on the better part. Still not much traffic. Sometime after Regina my sister and swapped so that I could take a nap. The roads were great. No snow, no ice, nice and dry, had been that way for awhile. I was napping and I heard my sister make a odd sound. I asked her what?
She said that there was a cop car behind us with the lights on and pulling us over. She was speeding! Big time speeding! I think the speed limit was 60mph and she was doing about 80?
She said that she was trying to see how fast she could go and had started to slow down. So she got caught on the slowing down side. She got a ticket, I think about 200 bucks? After she got the ticket she made me drive.

With the bad weather that day before and then in the morning, I was getting tired. We had a early night. We got into Brandon at dusk. Found a place that was lit up with little Christmas lights.
Unloaded all the stuff, took the dog for her evening walk. Then we went in search of a place to get dinner. We both wanted a green salad, we wanted real food.

Yes, we had junk food on this road trip, that's half the fun! My junk food was a big can of wasabi peas, teriayaki jerky and Chocolate Resins. ( Not raisins, I had the chewy chocolate candy)

What kind of junk food do you eat on a long road trip?

  1. When ever I read your question at the end of the blog it always reminds me of Makena's journal. She usually ends with a question. My favorite road junk is doritos and a coke. :)

  4. My favorite snacks are trail mix & lots of coffee. I always buy a chocolate bar or maybe Rolos (carmel & chocolate).

In Canada, did you buy any of those pecan tarts....they are sooooo good.

  6. When you came down to Colo for road trips, wasn't it squirt cheese on crackers, granny smiths w/carmel dip, lots of iced tea. Yum, remember the biscuits/sausage gravy the folks at Jackson Hole KOA gave us one morning for breakfast!!! I want to go back to Yellowstone to that warm river!!!

  7. I'm enjoying the story of your trip Krissy....I originally thought you would have come down straight thru BC.

Road trip treats here always are Tim Horton's coffee with their donuts....late afternoon, I've gotta stop at Mickey D's for some large fries.
