Today, Saturday I went over to my friend Kellie's house to help them finish off the chickens and by finish off I mean kill. We had only 11 today, took about 2 hours to do them. The system was
1. Get a chicken. (Not my job)
2. Kill the chicken. (Not my job)
2. Kill the chicken. (Not my job)
3. Try not to get in the spray pattern of the decapitated chicken. ( Not a good day to wear shorts)
4. Rough pluck the chicken. ( My job)
5. Help Kellie's husband gut, and cut up the chicken. (My job)
6. Rinse the chickens and put in zip lock bags. (My job with Kellie's help)
A good time was had by all. Really, we had a few laughs, not sure if its proper to laugh but one of the chickens ( No head mind you!) ran under the truck and we where running around trying to stop that, and the barn cats where trying to get to the dead chickens that where still moving and sorry but its funny to watch a cat jump cause a dead chicken flapped its wings and squawked!
I don't have a problem with this kind of stuff, must be because my Dad was and is still a hunter and when we where kids, Dad would bring back a gunny sack full of ducks or geese and us kids would have to pluck them. Then as we got older we realized that we should get paid for that! I think my sisters and I worked our way up to a quarter a bird! We where making the big bucks then! When I was in high school, during the summer I worked in the fish factory and gutted fish all summer long! 7 days a week, 10 hours a day for 2 months, so I had a lot of exposure to gore.
Kellie and I read a lot of murder type books so I was trying to get her the read the spray pattern on my legs, trying to see if she could figure out what way it all went down! ( Keep the day job Kellie! )
On a whole other note, for some reason one of my post didn't put a date on itself so it looks like I missed a day but I didn't.
Good job Kris....you chicken plucker you, hee, hee! Poor Kellie. I know how much she HATES to see the chickens get killed. The story about the headless chicken is hilarious....I wish I could have been there today to see that. Where's the camera when you need it hey?
ReplyDeleteThat brought back the good ol days of plucking ducks and geese. Remember the lice too? That gives me the heebie jeebies just thinking about it.
ReplyDeleteOh yea! The lice! I think now that that would creep me out, but ack then It didnt
ReplyDeleteSometimes we want to raise chickens, other times we don't. Reading this entry is not helping the pro-chicken camp!
ReplyDeleteBut it's all true... This is where food comes from, people! It's good to remind ourselves of that. :)
