The big event.

I was out late tonight. I went to the local high school play. My friend that works with me at the library has a kid that was in the play. He had a small part but he did his part very well. I had a swell of pride for him.

The play was Foot Loose. I know I went to the movie when it came out in 1984 but I don't remember all of it. Other then the song by the same name.

The high school play was 2 hours long and I enjoyed every minute of it. The 3 girls that played Rusty,Urlene and Wendy Jo had the audience laughing out loud. I was impressed with the vocals on them. But then, I have been told that I can't carry a tune in a bucket.

I also learned something about the movie. It's based on a true story! Did you know that?
Back in 1979 ( 1979?!) the town of Elmore City, OK had outlawed public dancing within its city limits for over 90 years. The class of 79 ( all 11 of them ) wanted to have a school dance and the town elders and a local preacher were against it and it caused a big split in the town. The school board voted yes and the rest is history. I just can't get over that this was in 1979!
I just assumed that all public schools had proms where dancing happened.

Boy, you really can learn something new each day!

  1. I think I knew it was based on a true story, but 1979 surprises me. That was my senior year! It seems like the movie came out about that time. I think it's cool you are going to HS events now.

  2. 1979 was also my senior year, but I don't remember that situation happening or the movie.

I'm glad you enjoyed the school play. When my daugther was in the play for several years, I helped out during play practice. I spent many hours helping, plus I was in charge of the refreshment table. Yup, those were the days!!!!!!

  3. I didn't realize it was a true story. Then again, I was only 4 years old in 1979.

I'm not totally surprised it was a true story though. The Seventh Day Adventists still believe that dancing is evil, because it might lead to sex. Or worse! Sex standing up! After all, sex is only for procreation (and only if you can't avoid that) and not for pleasure, right? Well, at least traditional Adventists believe this way. (William Kellogg of Kellogg cereal fame never had any biological children. He and his wife adopted a (excuse my language here) butt-load of kids, because of the belief that sex is evil and dirty. And yes, he was Adventist.)

There are other christian groups that still hold on to Puritanical beliefs this way. I wouldn't be surprised if the main religious group of that small Oklahoma town followed those beliefs as well.

  4. OS. I did not know that about Kellogg. Again I learned something new today!
I think dancing is fine. I just wish I was better at it! But I have to admit that I see some of this stuff that they call "dirty dancing" and I don't think that that is OK at the school prom!
I remember in Anchorage they had thing on the news and showed some of a high school prom. I think that the next year more parents were at the proms!
