Cut twice and still too short.

Well, I started building the chicken coop. But can it really be called a coop? I have a large garage and I'm building 2 walls to enclose a corner. So it's not like I have to build a roof. ( But I am )

First I had to move that big round thing. That weighed a ton. I cleaned off the top and thought that I would just tip it over on its side an roll it out. I could hardly move it! It must weigh over 200lbs. I got it moved with some serious pushing. Then I took the broom to that corner and swept a bunch of bugs and mouse stuff out of the way.

I placed the studs on the floor and realized that I had measured wrong. I thought that I had a 7ft square in that corner so that's why I got the 7ft length studs. Well, I really have a 6ft x 7ft corner.
I made adjustments and started to measure off my centers. I'm using 22in centers. That's when I realized that I forgot to get nails! So I was all dressed up but no party to go to. I then yanked nails out that I could see. I got enough nails to build the one wall. I will need to do some more nailing on it but I got enough to get started. (It's so much fun hammering old nails straight!)

On the last pic. That end is 28in wide. That will be the door for the pen. The walls will be 6ft4in high. I'm going use some hangers and put up some rafters so that I can have a platform on top. I will be able to store some hay up there. ( Also a place for the cats to hang out at.)

My sister and BIL will be coming down in late May. He will make a door in the wall for the chickens to going and out of. I will still need to build nest boxes and some roosting poles.

The wall that will be on the right hand side ( where just the stud is at on the ground ) will be plywood as that wall will be shared with the goat pen.

Also today, April 19, one year ago I left Alaska. That first day I drove from Anchorage to Haines Junction in Canada. That's about 775 miles. About 14 hours of driving. My twin sister came with to share the driving. More about that later.

  1. I'm impressed! Despite the measuring problems, you still managed to get some of the wall up...good job! Where did you learn your carpenter skills????

  2. You had a hard time moving the spool? Really? I grew up with those around our yard. Patio furniture, a way to sneak in and out your window, something fun to walk on while it rolls... They were great!

wv: reste- what you need to do after an especially hard day of work. Like rest, only you must do so more actively.

  6. OS- Really, that thing was/is heavy. I'm pretty strong. With no problem I can pick up my 75lbs dog
I can sling a 40lbs bag dog. Maybe I was having a weak day yesterday. I'm going to try and move it later on today.

Annie- I'm planing on getting 25 chickens. Straight run. Rhode Island red.

  7. You might want to save the wire spool to put in goat pen for them to climb on. Will the chickens run free outside or will you fence off a run??
Was able to do some "yard" work yesterday altho' still dryin out. Must be spring - turkeys were calling, chipmunks out, bees & butterflies.

  8. I wish we could have chickens! My area is one of the few that won't allow backyard chickens. A good chunk of the Portland Metro area will allow 3 chickens per residence.
