Today I went to a bunch of garage sales with my friend. She wanted to get an early start as all the good stuff is gone in a few hours. I was at her house at 7.30am and we were at the first one by 7.45am. She got 2 free bar stools at that one. Pays to be there early.
We had a map of that areas garage sales. She went to a few on Friday ( The have them on Fridays here, which I find very odd ) and so we skipped the ones that she went to as they mostly had kid clothes.
I didn't buy anything till we got to the 5th one. I bought 1dz farm fresh eggs for a dollar. That's a bargain. She had a nice chicken coop so I was checking it out and talking with her. I have now changed my mind on why type of chickens I want. They are called a Cochin. This is what they look like. She has 3 hens that went broody and she is going to hook me up when they are hatched and ready to go. I got her name and number and will call her at the end of May and see how things are going.
Then we went to more garage sales. I have been wanting a dutch oven. I don't have anything that can go from the stove top into the oven and I miss that. I didn't find a dutch oven but I did find a 12in cast iron skillet with a matching lid, a 2qt casserole with a matching lid, a nice basket and a plant stand. All for under 15 bucks.
When I got home I put my new iron skillet to work. I melted some butter and oil and fried a whole yellow onion, took that out of the pan, added a little more butter/oil and browned some pork chops, took them out, added a little more butter and flour and made a nice thick brown gravy with milk, put the chops and onions back in, added some carrots and some cut up potatoes and put the lid on and into the oven it went. ( Cause I can now ) It smells really good. Should be ready in about another hour.
My tummy just growled.

Mmmm...I can smell those pork chops right now. Any leftovers?
ReplyDeleteWow, you found a cast iron skillet? Excellent purchase. I'm impressed that you bought all that stuff for $15. Hey, maybe that library wage is going to work after all (snicker, snicker).
ReplyDeleteGood deals, indeed, on your garage saling. sale-ing? saleing? There is no good way to write that.
ReplyDeleteI know people who take every Friday off in late April and throughout May to do the Friday garage sale deals.
I used to go to garage sales all the time when the kids were younger and were always growing out of their clothes.
ReplyDeleteSound like you got some great deals. I love my cast iron skillet for making corn bread.
That sounds like a fun day. I have 5 cast iron skillets that I use all the time. I love them. I like those kinds of chickens too - that's one of the breeds I've been interested in. I like the color of the roosters. Does that mean you aren't going to order your chicks then? You're going to get them from this person?
ReplyDeletePaula Deen would be proud of your chops!!
ReplyDeleteWhat does "broody" mean?
I have seen Friday evening garage sales in Anch, actually had one myself, best sales of the sale!
Oooh! Is there enough for me too?
ReplyDeleteAunt Krissy, will you tell us more about the chickens? The farm we are hoping to rent has 10 chickens on it that we're hoping to buy. (Current renters can't take them with). They're the Aura-whatever easter egg chickens. And it's been so long since I helped with chickens! Oh, and there was this car accident that sort of messed with my memory too. So, I need extra chicken help.
Why are you wanting Cochins? Are you going to have a rooster too?
Annettee, I made enough to have left overs, maybe breakfast?
ReplyDeleteK, i don't get the Friday thing, most people are working on Fridays
back up in AK you hardly ever saw a sale on friday.
Pak Art, That's right, I wont be getting and chicks shipped to me. I will go to her house and pick them up.
Janice- Broody means that the hens want to hatch the eggs, They wont get off the nest and get cranky at you if you try and take their eggs. A lot of chickens are "bad" moms and don't care about sitting on their eggs.
OS. This is the very first time that I have ever had chickens. So I'm a newbie in the chicken world.
I was going to go for the Rhode Island Reds but when I saw these chickens I just thought that they were neat looking. I would like to have a rooster or 2. What I read about thses chickens is that they are a broody breed. I like the ideal of havning little chicks around.
Hey, I have no idea if this is useful, but this came up in my RSS reader today:
