A Parade

I like this living in middle America. The rural lifestyle shapes people. When I lived in Anchorage
the city would do some big things for Memorial day. I never went to them. They were big productions and I always felt that there was an agenda behind it. Like the free hot dogs and stuff at the downtown park where the Mayor is there to meet and great and also other politicians.

Here in small town America I felt that the whole reason for the parade was truly in honour of the Veterans. The parade started at the high school and ended at the local cemetery. At the cemetery there was a speech about the sacrifice that our military service has done for us and then it ended in a public prayer.

I will be honest and say that I got a little teary. It also caused me to ponder how and why we have allowed such a solemn occasion to turn into a day of commercialism? When I got home I saw commercials about Memorial day sales. How did their sacrifice for our freedom turn into a day that mattress's and cars and stuff are on sale?

  1. Oh how true Krissy. You have amazing insight into the sorry state of our society.

  2. My daughter played in that school band for seven years. I miss those days of watching my daughter march and play her clarinet.

  3. That looks wonderful. I'm afraid I didn't participate in any "memorial" type activities except at church the sermon honored those who've gone before. We had BBQ. See you tomorrow!

  4. Glad you enjoyed the parade.

I think about that too. Seems like we celebrate, commemorate and explote all at the same time.
