Liar liar pants on fire.

I work in a library. I just assume that people that come to libraries are good people. Today I had a big fat liar.

A wanna be patron came in and wanted to get a library card. I asked her the following questions
Do you already have a library card? Do you have a library card with any library in the MORE system like Menomonie or Eau Claire? She said no, I gave her the card to fill out and gave her the little tour of the library and told her to look at books and stuff and I would have her card done in about 5 minutes.

In about 3 minutes I found out that she did have a library card. The name, address and DL all matched up. Looked a little deeper and she had over $45.00 is fines! You can't check out anything if you're over $10.00 in fines. I went back into the stacks and told her that she must of "forgot" that she already had a card and that until she paid off the fine she was not able to check out anything. She gave me a EDL (extended dumb look) and said that that sure was a puzzle and she would have to look into it. I gave her a copy of all her fines and she left. I don't think that she will be back.

On a whole other note. I made my 4th batch of soap yesterday. I made a citrus blend. I used the essential oils of blood orange, lime and pink grape fruit. It smells nice. I keep a record of each batch of soap so that if I want to remake that scent I can. I am trying to build up my soap stash as it takes 6 weeks before it can be used. I will try and hit the late craft fairs and be ready for the Christmas craft fairs.

  1. You know, I usually have a gut feeling about someone not telling us the truth, but that young woman really played along nicely and had both us believing her. Isn't it funny how some people are really good at acting??? People always amaze me. This is also why I love our library consortium....no one can hide or lie about past fines or replacements.

  2. Oh, that scent of soap sounds really nice!

I still think you should sell on Etsy, too. ;) Then I could buy some!

  3. We've had the "My twin sister stole my card, so those video fines aren't mine, and now I want another card" story. It gets to me sometimes, how people can look you in the eye and lie. Fortunately, they usually move on and don't come back.

  4. That sounds like the perfect blend. Those were my favorite scents if I recollect correctly. I get people who call in and state "I didn't get my free yellow coupon" in my tax bill. Well, if you didn't get it, how did you know it was yellow? Oh, well, my sister got one at her house. That could be the truth but it always makes me suspicious.

  5. $45 in fines is a lot....I always pay any fines (well they are always under $1)....cuz I just couldn't stand it if I wasn't allowed to take more books out.

The library is my Favourite place!

  6. She may be here today using the computer.

I think people sometimes have selective memories. I never trust anyone anymore when I ask if they have a card, I always look and see.
