As you know, if you have been reading my blog, I'm planing on getting goats and chickens. I have been staying up late looking up info on chicken breeds. But that's for another day.
Today I went to the soap makers house to see how she keeps her goats. All I know about goat keeping is from books. I wanted to have a look at her pens and fences. I wanted to see how she stored her feed and just wanted to ask questions and get answers from somebody that has goats. Unfortunately her goats were not on sight. That had been sent out a few months ago to meet some boy goats. (wink wink, nudge nudge ) They will be coming home soon. She invited me to come back anytime or call if I needed some help. She is such a nice person. I feel very lucky to have met her.
While there we got to talking about other uses for goat milk other then soap and drinking. She told me that they also ( they being her family) make cheese, ice cream and yogurt. She did admit that the ice cream is not as rich as cow milk ice cream but she said that it still tasted good.
I see myself now making cheese and yogurt and ice cream.
When I was getting ready to go she gave me 2 packages of goat cheese. The ball shape one is a herb cheese and the crumbled cheese is a feta like cheese with garlic. I had a taste of that. It's not as sharp as a feta but still good in it's own way.
I'm starting to feel very tree hugger-ish and "earthy" I might have to stop shaving or wearing deodorant!
sounds very interesting - so what did you think of her pens and goat area? Did you meet the family? I like the goat cheese I've tried in past, but don't htink the ice cream sounds so hot. You'll have to let me know how it is.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you could see the "goat" woman today...I like her too. To bad the goats weren't there today.
ReplyDeleteI dont' think I've ever tried goat cheese before. Is it tangy?
I like goat cheese, although I haven't had it alot. I wonder how the icecream is? Do you know how many goats your're going to get?
ReplyDeleteI only plan on getting 2 goats. And 25 chickens.
ReplyDeleteMaybe you should name your new goat and chicken farm. The goat gal has a name for her animal farm! Hey, do a contest...what should I name my new hobby farm? (Hay River Homestead for example)
ReplyDeleteOK, how come no one commented on the no deoderant and what not? Don't do it Krissy. Deoderant is good. You could make a goat milk based deoderant. Have you thought of making lotions from the goat milk?
