Wow, you all had some good ideals.
I have heard and read about male goats. I don't plan on keeping any. They are the reason that a lot of people don't like goat milk. When males are around, the females tend to give "bucky" milk. Well that's what a few books said. When my girls need a boyfriend I will send them out on a long date.
In all my looking around on the net about essential oils I have yet to see any recipes about blending them. I was thinking of some blends. I thought of lemon grass/ basil and Oregon Sunshine gave the ideal of Lime/Coconut, that sound good. But how do you know how much of each scent? I made some bath salts one time and it was trial and error trying to mix the scents.
I would hate to waste a batch of soap. I will keep on searching, there's got to be recipes out there.
This is what I like about blogging. I didn't even think about etsy.com but my blog friend K brought it up. That's a good ideal. And that got me thinking that I probably should also set up a web site.
Some of you mentioned Tea Tree Oil. I'm not sure what that smells like. If I'm thinking about the same thing, I think it has a medicinal smell.? I don't think that I liked it. Isn't that the stuff that got it's start over in Australia and became real popular as a wonder product? But then I guess it's not about what scents that I like! I need to think about what other people like.
For now I think that my floral scents will be Rose, Lavender and Sweet pea.
I like that ideal of some fruit scents so I think that I will go with Sweet Orange, something and something. I will have to think of two more.
The spice scents will be Sandalwood, Ylang Ylang and Patchouli. ( I think Ylang Ylang is a warm scent? Not sure )
That will be nine scents. Once I get confidant with making soap I think then I will branch out and try others and blending scents. I need to realizes that I don't have to make 100 different types right now. I need to see what sells and also what people ask for.
On the peppermint scent. I bought a bar of that and lets just say that it was way, waaaay to refreshing in places that you don't want that kind of refreshment! I'm afraid of that one.
Now the big question. Do I name the scents or just call them what they are? I see names like "Sunshine blast" and it's a citrus scent. Or "Fisherman's friend" and it's an Anise scent ( Which I like). I'm leaning towards just calling them what they are.
I need to come up with garlic and rosemary scented soap and call it "Lamb dinner" Am I sick or what?

"Lamb dinner" made me laugh so hard I had tears in my eyes!
ReplyDeleteI'd go with calling the scents what they are, but I'm practical like that.
Tea tree oil is a medicinal smell, but still pretty pleasant. It's got astringent properties, but I'm not sure that the astringent properties would be there if you're putting it in the soap for scent.
Oh! I wish the ladies in Soldotna who ran Scentsations were still in business! They'd be able to help. But alas! I don't even remember their names!
ReplyDeleteAnyone from Alaska who reads this know who they are and how to get a hold of them? I know they could answer Kris's questions about scent.
I say call the soaps for what they are. When I buy homemade soaps, I like to know the scents, oils or ingredients in each soap. Naming them a "catchy" name might be misleading to some...just my opinion.
ReplyDeleteLove the goat picture!
My personal fav name is; "Jamaica Me Crazy"
ReplyDeletevery spicey and yummy....
I don't know if you read day old messages but I left a message on yesterday's blog.
Krissy - do you have a good recipe for ribs and kraut?
ReplyDeleteI saw someone recommend vanilla - I agree. That's a very good scent to me. I'm bothered by too fake or strong scents. I was just given a bar of homemade soap (not goat's milk) called Blissful and I really like the scent so I looked at the label: it states "fragrance added". Not very helpful! It's from Gladheart Acres in Palmer and advertised as "handcrafted Silk Soap". How is silk a soap product?
ReplyDeleteHey, I learned something new today!
ReplyDeleteThere is a patent for including silk fibers in soap: http://www.freepatentsonline.com/7314851.html
Who knew? What purpose would silk serve in soap, I wonder, besides novelty?
I have read about silk in soap. It is too make the soap bubbles have that silky feeling.
ReplyDeleteI amgoing to use essential oils as they are the pure form of the scent and also natural. Fragrance are man made and that's how you get the "rain, wind, bliss ect" scents.
Krissy, have you been to this site?
ReplyDeletehttp://www.soapcalc.com/
I have it in my Favourites in case I ever start making soaps....it's a helpful place for figuring out recipes....
Lamb Dinner, lol!

Speaking of lavendar it reminded me of an article in todays Anchorage Daily News garden section about the "Bloomerang Lilac". Have you heard of or seen them down there?? Sez they will bloom spring until 1st frost. I just love lilacs and the idea of having more than a couple weeks bloom sounds wonderful. Will try and find my "Blended Beauty" book that has all sorts of recipies for beauty, hair etc. Maybe something in there would be helpful for your endeavor (no have not done anything out of it - that project is somewhere behind sewing Taylor's show clothes, stained glass, beaded horse shoes, blue jean rugs/bowls, belt dying/decorating etc.......!!!!)
