Got Milk?

Why yes I do, thanks for asking. This morning I went over to the goat lady's place and milked me a goat. She has 4 does that she milks. I helped milk the first one. She said that this would be the easy one to learn on as the goat had bigger teats. I only did about half of it before my right hand and forearm got tired. I did milk a little with my left hand but it was not as coordinated as my right hand. Just so you know, you have to be a little "vigorous" when you milk. I was being too gentle at first, you kind of have to bump you hand up into the udder to get milk in the teat. The goat lady can milk a goat from start to finish on about 5 minutes. She is fast. These goats just had their babies so they are not in full swing of milk production. I got one gallon of milk. When I got home I strained it and now it's in the fridge cooling. Tonight I will weigh it out and freeze it. I had a taste of it. Taste good. It's more creamy then what I'm used to. Does not have any goat-ie ness to it. If I was blind folded I don't think that I could tell if from cow milk.

What's cuter?
1. A box full of puppies.
2. A basket full of kittens.
3. 6 baby goats.

If you picked 1 or 2 you are so so wrong! She has 6 babies and they were underfoot wanting you to feed them and pet them. But oh they were so cute.

After the milking we went into the goat pasture. She has about 20 goats now. She did have 56 last year but she wants her herd size smaller. That's why she is going to sell me 2 of them. I was kneeling down and the goats would try and smell my hair, ears, mouth and one goat tasted my T-shirt. They would lean on me and when I would stand up one would get between my legs and rub it's head on my knee.

I think that I'm going to love having goats.

  1. I think you're going to love being a "goat woman." The goats sound like good pets and possibly very affectionate too.

I'm glad you got your milking lesson today.

  4. I may have to administer a "heidi" haircut when I get there to put you in the right mood for goat milking, along with yodeling lessons. Yodel le ye hoo!
