So far I have not had any problems with making soap. I have read some horror stories about soap seizing in the pot or never coming to trace. So far, so good. The 5th batch did take about 10 minutes more to trace then the others. I think that the super duper high humidity that we had that day may have been the cause.
Here is the slab of soap tipped out. Bummer, didn't know that I had a crease in the paper. (Rats)This is what the bottom of the soap looks like.
I made that black thing. I needed to have a guide line for 1 and 1/2 inch. I lay it down and score the slab. It really helps so that each bar of soap is almost like the other bars. Remember, it is handmade and hand cut soap, so they are not machine perfect.
Cutting the slab of soap into logs with my handy-dandy soap cutter. I have been cutting inside the box. This is the first time that I have tipped out the slab and cut. ( With the handy-dandy cutter) The first few batches I tipped out and tried to free hand cut. That didn't work out so hot.
I really like this blade for cutting. Like a hot knife through butter. Here are the logs that I cut. I got 13 to the batch, each log gives 3 bars, so I end up with 39 bars of soap to a batch. I use a bar of Ivory soap for measuring the length of each bar. I get 3 bars to each log of soap.
I think I'd like the spruce scent too. Your good little bars of soap look great. It'll be fun to see them all packed up with your label.
ReplyDeleteKrissy, the paper crease is wonderful - part of the handmade identity - not perfect - not made by machine - made by loving, creative hands! I love them!
ReplyDeleteSo, when do they hit the market? Should I get my order in now?
ReplyDeleteI think I'd like white spruce!
ReplyDeleteI was wondering how you plan to package them... I guess we'll find out soon. Your pictures make me think of peanut butter fudge.(I have a sweet tooth.)
are they about 1.5' x 3" x 2"? That's what it kind of looks like. It looks like you are really getting the hang of cutting them neatly - I like the looks of the lavender one best, but can't tell the scents. I should have some sample pics for you tomorrow sometime.
ReplyDeleteKrissy, your soap is going to be a hit!! I'll keep an eye on Patty so she'll get to working soon on the wrapping/packaging ideas.
ReplyDeleteOh yeah...maybe I shouldn't say this publically...but the "yassa" chicken was a "no sir" chicken for us. Maybe I did something terribly wrong or maybe we're just not into vinegary/citrusy stuff but I won't be making that again. Come to think of it, you were the kid who would take a swig out of the vinegar bottle just to get that zing! weirdo!
Alicia. "Who did" Still do. I have right now 5 types of vinagar. And a swig of it is good for you. maybe you didn't have enough onions. They have sugar is them so that mellows out the tartness of the other stuff. It's all good. you like tuna noddle crap with green peas!
ReplyDeleteYou did an excellent job of picture taking. Can't wait to try a bar of soap...I can smell the soaps already!!!!!
ReplyDeleteYour soaps look great Krissy!
ReplyDeleteAnnie
